It was 4+ hours of walking difficult terrain today. I turned on my Garmin watch at about halfway. I used another GPS to take waypoints at each protected spring. Plus my camera has a GPS so I have long and lat w/ each photo. This should make tracking easier (for present and years to come). (note to self: camera battery dies quickly when GPS is on).

Very hot. The people had piles of sand and rock ready for construction. Amazing how these women walk this difficult terrain with 20L of water on their head. It was more than enough of a challenge without water.

The purpose of the tour was to give communities heads up that contractors will arrive next Monday. We also needed to ensure they were ready with rocks and sand..and lunches for the skilled labour that will be arriving. KASFOOC reps also pointed out that some of the sand and rocks was not good enough quality. Many of them have been given false promises in the past, but seeing mzungos was convincing. This is good as it means once we start we will proceed quickly.

One group did not wait for us and went ahead and built a low - cost UNprotected spring. Its no good: prone to flooding and the water is not filtered through sand/ gravel. We will de-construct and rebuild- this one should come in under budget.
